What is Bibimbap? A Guide to Korea's Iconic Rice Bowl

October 1, 2025 · Seoul Drop

Bibimbap (비빔밥) is one of Korea's most beloved dishes, and for good reason. This colorful, customizable rice bowl has captured hearts around the world, from Seoul street food stalls to fine dining restaurants.

The Name Says It All

"Bibimbap" literally translates to "mixed rice." Bibim (비빔) means "mixing" and bap (밥) means "rice." The magic happens when you mix everything together with the spicy-sweet gochujang sauce.

What's in a Bibimbap?

A traditional bibimbap features:

  • Steamed rice as the base
  • Namul (나물): seasoned vegetables like spinach, bean sprouts, carrots, and zucchini
  • Protein: beef bulgogi, chicken, tofu, or a fried egg
  • Gochujang (고추장): the signature fermented red chili paste
  • Sesame oil and sesame seeds for finishing
  • Seoul Drop's Bibimbap

At Seoul Drop, we offer five different bibimbap options, from our classic Bulgogi Bibimbap to our Tofu Bibimbap for vegan guests. Each one is made fresh to order with our house-made gochujang.
